Fall roundup: FOK teams across Canada help rally thousands for climate action

Since the beginning of this fall, parents, caregivers, kids, and community members across Canada have been all out for climate action!

Local For Our Kids teams have helped to organize rallies, panels, concerts, and other actions in communities from coast to coast to coast. Many of these events were linked to September's Global Climate Strike and October's Seniors' Day of Climate Action. All told, thousands of people participated -- an inspiring demonstration of strength from this intergenerational, intersectional movement for climate justice.

Here are some of the highlights.

National and global rallies

As part of the Global Climate Strike, The For Our Kids Vancouver and Burnaby teams helped organize the Vancouver Climate Strike on September 20. Thousands of community members showed up and marched for environmental justice, delivering a clear message to policymakers in Vancouver City Hall and beyond -- don't go back on your climate promises! Organized in coalition with local First Nations, the event featured speakers, art, and even a surprise concert from punk-folk legend Billy Bragg. Meanwhile, For Our Kids volunteers also participated in Climate Strike rallies in Montreal and Antigonish, Nova Scotia, channelling their creative energy into making these events successful as well.

Two days before the Global Climate Strike, For Our Kids Toronto members joined over 8,000 people who took to the streets of downtown Toronto as part of the Grassy Narrows River Run. The central demand of this action -- as it is every year -- is that the government take action to end the mercury poisoning crisis that has been harming the people, waters, and ecosystems of Grassy Narrows since 1962. The crowd was enormous and intergenerational, with inspiring displays of decolonial solidarity from groups fighting for Indigenous sovereignty, Palestinian liberation, disability justice, an end to poverty, and queer liberation.

And on October 1, groups mobilized Seniors Day for Climate Action events in communities across Canada. Uniting under the slogan "Later is too late!", these actions built upon the sense of responsibility that many seniors feel toward protecting future generations through bold climate action. In London, Ontario, For Our Kids London hosted a Families Talk Climate event -- a beautiful community conversation that facilitated connections across generations. In Alberta, For Our Kids members and partner organizations took part in Seniors Day events in both Edmonton and Calgary

Community events

On September 22, Parents 4 Climate Victoria participated in Bowker Creek Biodiversity Day, inviting kids learn about the local ecosystem by painting cardboard trout cutouts.

On September 28, For Our Kids Ottawa/ Gatineau co-organized a huge Kidical Mass bike rally. More than 150 people -- kids, caregivers, community members, and politicians -- rode together for safe streets and green infrastructure. This message is especially urgent, given the draconian anti-bike lane legislation the Ontario government recently passed. Building on the success of Kidical Mass, the team co-organized two more bike rallies in October.

In celebration of Circular Economy Month, For Our Kids Toronto co-organized a Family Ecofair with the theme "Reduce, Reuse, Repair." Community members swapped and repaired clothing and enjoyed games, music, art activities, bike and composting workshops, and more. Organizers gave away 200 books to community kids!

Similarly, For Our Kids Burnaby hosted their second community mending circle on October 20. This is a great way to extend the lifespan of clothing and slow down the tide of fast fashion while building community.

Campaigns

Across BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, methane from oil and gas facilities is being released into the atmosphere through flaring, venting, and leaks - often within a kilometre of schools and daycares. In addition to being a major cause of climate change, methane contributes to asthma and other respiratory diseases, and increases the risk of preterm births and strokes. Want to take action on this issue? For Our Kids Alberta is currently running a campaign called Protect Kids from Methane Pollution, which makes it easy to send a letter to Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault, the Federal Minister of Health Mark Holland, and your local MP. The goal is to collect as many signatures as possible before the launch of COP29, the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku, on November 11.

For Halloween, our national team launched an online action to send a message to BMO CEO Darryl White to stop dressing up like a climate leader, and start acting like one. We encouraged our networks to us photos of themselves and their kids costume with a sign to remind BMO that families are tired of greenwashing tricks and ready for real climate action, using the hashtag #ClimateChangeIsScary.
