As students and youth, you have a right to quality education about one of the biggest issues affecting your lives – climate change. We know students want better climate education to better understand the social and political context of fighting climate change, develop an equity and justice lens, and have opportunities to take meaningful action. These tools aim to provide you with resources to ask for better education for yourself and your fellow students.
1. Spread the word!
- Start a discussion about climate education with your school’s eco-club, or student council
- Ask a teacher to host a discussion about climate education and fossil fuel Influence in education in a class.
- Reach out to local youth environmental organizations to share the report and ask for their support
- Share the report with your teachers union! They may even have an environment or climate justice committee that could help raise this issue with teachers.
2. Ask your school to prioritize critical climate education and create a fossil-fuel free education policy.
Ask your Principal for a meeting or bring this issue to a student climate group, and let them know your concerns about climate education and fossil fuel influence. Here are some ideas about what to say:
3. Tell your School Board students want more leadership on climate education.
- Send a message with your fellow students asking for more funding and resources for quality climate education and a prohibition on fossil fuel sponsorship in schools. Feel free to get creative! You could send in photos, a video or drawings to better express your perspective.
- Find out if your School Board has a student senate or student trustees and bring up this issue with them. A student senate could pass a motion requesting that the School Board take action!
- Does your School Board have an environment committee? If so, you can request to speak at one of their meetings. For support, reach out to For Our Kids at [email protected].
4. Tell your Ministry of Education students want investment in strong climate education now.
Send a message with your fellow students asking for more funding and resources for quality climate education and a prohibition on fossil fuel sponsorship in schools. Again, students have a powerful voice – feel free to get creative to make your point!
5. Demand better climate education from the federal government!
Send a letter to the federal government to demand support for the education you need to understand the climate crisis, including climate change science, the social and political causes of climate change and the importance of climate justice.
