Seize The Moment: Template for Climate Conversations with Your MP
The weeks following a federal election are absolutely critical. The federal budget, cabinet, and policy priorities are all in flux, giving community members a short window of opportunity to exert outsize influence on their elected federal officials.
So, let's seize the political moment together! Reach out to your MP and tell them that, as a constituent, you expect them to make climate action a top priority. If we can get our entire network to push their MPs on climate issues, we can put some serious pressure on the federal government to do the right thing.
We've created a template that makes it easy for you to build a relationship with your MP. Use it, share it, and let us know how it goes!
Welcome email template to elected MPs
Instructions:
- Look up your MP’s contact information here. If it’s not yet available on the House of Commons website, you can find their contact info on their campaign website or wait until government information is updated later in May.
- Copy and paste the below template into your email or another word document
- Edit and personalize the message to reflect your concerns and context. If you know something about your MP, like they’re a parent themselves, you can add that as well. The more personalized, the more likely your email is to be read and responded to.

Subject: Congratulations on your recent election
Dear MP X,
Congratulations on your recent (re)election to the House of Commons.
I’m a constituent in your riding and a mother/father of X children, and I wanted to reach out to welcome you to this role and share some of my key concerns as a member of your community.
As a parent, a big concern of mine is how to protect my family and community and advocate for policies that will ensure our kids inherit a kinder, fairer, safer world.
For parents like me, the deepening climate crisis is a huge issue. Families across Canada are facing more devastating climate impacts every year, an affordability crisis driven by corporate profits and climate inaction, and growing frustration that powerful institutions have abandoned their commitments to take meaningful climate action at a time when we need it most. Our children will bear the brunt of these impacts, facing growing health risks and inheriting a more environmentally, economically and politically unstable world.
Parents want to see elected leaders like yourself act with the political courage, foresight and ambition to tackle this crisis head-on.
This means supporting a vision for a bright Canadian future, one where we prioritize real solutions to make Canadians’ lives better: affordable clean energy, clean air and water, affordable low-carbon housing, widespread public transit, and good green jobs, all rooted in respect for Indigenous rights and sovereignty. This also means ending support for projects that are keeping us tied to a carbon-intensive, dangerous status quo, even if it requires political bravery.
Leadership also means helping people understand the opportunities and benefits of this transition to a decarbonized world. We know that bold climate action can and will make people’s lives better and catalyze a more independent, equitable future for our country.
As an elected leader, we urge you to think about your legacy and the importance of this moment. This is an incredible chance to be part of leading Canadians forward and play a historic role in righting the course toward a livable future. Parents across the country are ready to stand behind and champion strong policies to build the green, fair, safe future we all deserve, and we hope that you will help to bring these policies forward.
Congratulations, and I look forward to hearing more about how you and your office will support a safe, green future for our kids.
Thank you,
X
