Recording of talk with Sarah Marie Wiebe, author of Hot Mess: Mothering Through a Code Red Climate Emergency, now live
Last month, For Our Kids hosted a series of events centred on Sarah Marie Wiebe's recent book, Hot Mess: Mothering Through a Code Red Climate Emergency. In the book, Sarah grounds a very personal narrative about her experiences as a new mother navigating multiple environmental catastrophes in her critical expertise as an ecofeminist, anti-colonial scholar. The book is incredible, and if you haven't read it yet, we encourage you to buy it from your local independent bookstore or check it out from your library.
We knew that the book's narrative, analysis, and calls for a world built upon caring, ethical relations would resonate with the For Our Kids network, and the events were a big success.
On January 8, For Our Kids Ottawa-Gatineau members Sara Parkes and Susan Bakshi hosted an online book club discussion. They opened up a space for participants to pore through the insights and lessons of the book together, reflecting on their own personal experiences and coming up with questions for the author. 18 people attended, which made for an expansive yet intimate conversation.
Then, on January 18, Jinhwa Hwong-Ambrose, organizer with the For Our Kids national support team, hosted an online discussion with Sarah Marie Wiebe herself. The conversation provided a platform for an in-depth exploration of the book's themes, as well as strategies for engaging parents and caregivers in organizing for environmental justice. (Lucky participants in Ottawa could attend an IRL watch party, hosted by the For Our Kids Ottawa-Gatineau). You can watch the recording below:
We share our gratitude to Sarah for writing this book and engaging in such a meaningful way with our network, and we're eager to see how the impact of her work continues to affect positive change in our communities.
