Climate-concerned parents and families strongly reject Alberta-Canada MOU

Our statement
The For Our Kids network, representing thousands of families across the country, is deeply concerned about the Alberta-Canada MOU, which commits to moving ahead with a new crude oil pipeline to BC, proposes lifting the oil tanker ban on the West Coast, and dismantles, delays or creates carve-outs for critical climate policies like the emissions cap, clean electricity and methane regulations.
This agreement represents a betrayal of Coastal First Nations and Indigenous rights, and of all Canadians who care about a livable future for our families and communities. It’s a huge concession to the oil and gas industry at the expense of Canadians facing a cost of living crisis and increasing climate impacts every year. These concessions are in contrast to the things that most Canadian families want and need - like a 100% renewable East-West electricity grid, non-market affordable housing, and investments in child care, health care, and schools. These would be truly nation-building investments.
Building a new oil pipeline would push Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions through the roof. By exempting Alberta from the emissions cap and clean electricity regulations and delaying the methane regulations, Carney has also effectively thrown out the best tools we have to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable, and with that, our hopes of meeting Canada’s climate commitments.
Canadian taxpayers, already struggling with affordability, should not have to foot the bill for another expensive pipeline, with no private proponents, that communities don’t want and the planet can’t handle. While the world transitions away from fossil fuels, Canadians continue to subsidize the fossil fuel industry rather than supporting a just transition to renewables. We spent over $74.6 billion in financial support to the oil and gas sector in the last five years. We can’t afford to spend more.
Signing this agreement with no consultation or consent from affected First Nations or the BC government also represents a dangerous step backward for free, prior and informed consent, reconciliation and democracy. This is not nation-building – this approach sows division and shows us that Carney cares more about big business and CEOs than the rights and well-being of all Canadians.
This project and backsliding on climate commitments will be fought every step of the way. We stand with First Nations, affected communities and all Canadians working together to build a just, safe future for everyone.
