Is Extreme Heat Impacting Learning in Your Child's School?
At For Our Kids, we believe that every child deserves a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment to learn and thrive. However, with our changing climate, many of our schools are facing a growing challenge: extreme heat in classrooms.
This isn't just about discomfort. When classrooms get too hot, it has a serious impact on our children's health, well-being, and their ability to learn effectively. Research from the Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and Environment (CPCHE) highlights that children are especially vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat due to their developing bodies. Prolonged exposure can lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and a significant drop in concentration and cognitive function, making it incredibly difficult for students to focus and learn.
Imagine trying to concentrate on a lesson, write a test, or even just sit still when the air is thick with heat, your head aches, and you're struggling to cool down. This is the reality for far too many students, teachers, and school staff across Canada.
The Impact of Overheated Classrooms:
- For Students: Reduced ability to concentrate, decreased academic performance, increased irritability, headaches, dizziness, and even heat-related illnesses. Hot conditions can also disrupt sleep patterns, further impacting learning and emotional regulation.
- For Teachers: Stressed working conditions, difficulty maintaining focus and energy, and having to prioritize heat safety over instruction, which impacts teaching quality.
- For Parents: Concerns for your child's well-being, disruptions to routines (e.g., early dismissals, changes to outdoor activities), and the frustration of knowing your child is learning in a sub-optimal environment.
Many of our schools were built without adequate cooling systems, and they are simply not designed to withstand the increasingly frequent and intense heat waves we are now experiencing.

Join Our "Hot Classrooms, Cool Solutions" Campaign!
We are launching a campaign to gather and amplify the lived experiences of extreme heat in our schools. Your personal observations and stories are powerful tools for change.
Here's how you can participate and make a difference:
-
Record General Lived Experiences: Use our general survey tool to document what extreme heat looks and feels like across school communities. This includes observations of how students are coping, the conditions teachers are working in, and your own experiences during hot weather.
- Host a School-Specific Survey: If you want to focus your efforts on your specific school community, reach out to us! We can create a dedicated survey just for your school, and you'll have direct access to all the data gathered from your school's parents. This allows you to collect highly relevant, localized evidence.
Email us at [email protected] to request a survey for your school.
How to Use Your Data for Advocacy:
The information you collect, whether from the general survey or a school-specific one, will be invaluable for:
- Engaging Your Parent Council: We highly recommend using your survey results to present to your school's parent council, demonstrating the critical need for them to engage on this topic. If you need to request your parent council's permission to share a survey within the school, we have an email template available to assist you.
- Presenting to Your Community: To facilitate these important conversations, we've developed a comprehensive slide deck with speaker notes. This valuable resource will equip you to present the key facts and concerns about extreme heat in schools to various stakeholders, including parents, educators, and school board officials, enabling powerful discussions and advocacy for better cooling measures.
- Advocating to the Ministry of Education: Our goal is for you to rally parents, teachers, students, and your school board. With their collective voice and the survey data, you'll be well-equipped to demand essential action and funding for cooling solutions from the Ministry of Education. To make this easier, we'll provide email and letter templates on request, helping you advocate for systemic policy changes that ensure all students are protected from extreme heat.
Together, we can ensure our schools are climate-ready and provide healthy, safe, and cool learning environments for all our children. Your voice is essential to driving this change!
