Canada’s financial sector is fueling the climate crisis and undermining opportunities to transition to a low-carbon economy. Canada’s big banks are all among the top 20 fossil fuel funders in the world. Despite claims to take the climate crisis and Indigenous sovereignty seriously, Canada’s financial institutions continue to push us further away from reconciliation, supporting projects without free, prior and informed consent that violate Indigenous rights, and refusing to take accountability.
Financial institutions cannot be trusted to take the right actions themselves, which is why we need parents, grandparents and allies to ask our government to create stronger rules for banks, pensions and insurance companies.
The Climate-Aligned Finance Act, introduced 2 years ago by Senator Rosa Galvez, is still making its way through Senate, and we’re watching its progress hopefully.
This 2024 fall season is a key moment to tell MPs to prioritize financial regulation in the House of Commons!
What can we do?
Let's make sure our elected leaders understand the importance of financial regulation, and tell them we want to see:
- Requirements for banks, pensions and insurance companies to have Credible Climate Plans to meet their net-zero transition goals
- Climate-aligned financial policy as a promise on every party platform for the 2025 election
How do we do it?
-
Contact your MP to share your support for financial regulation. Find your MP here. Give them a call / email them with this script, OR send a draft email to set up a meeting and use this agenda with key talking points. Feel free to reach out to [email protected] if you want help setting up the meeting or support with preparation.
-
Share this quick action with your For Our Kids team and/or your wider network! We encourage you to have meetings with MPs as a team or in groups to show strength in numbers. The more people who push for this, the likelier they are to act on it.
