More than 5,500 school support workers across Nova Scotia could be on strike as early as October 26.  We know that this will be difficult for parents, and that children who require additional supports will be particularly impacted.  We also know that these workers don’t want to strike, but that the province has failed to come to the table with a fair deal.

Workers included in this job action include educational program assistants, teaching assistants, bus drivers, early childhood educators, library staff, custodians, cafeteria workers, and African Nova Scotian and Mi’kmaw student support workers.  They are essential workers keeping our schools running, and our children healthy and safe.  They support learning, inclusion and equity in schools.

CUPE says workers have spent months raising concerns about the conditions they work under and the resources schools need. They want a fair deal that addresses their concerns, provides a safe and healthy work environment and creates a better learning environment for students.  We have been raising similar concerns through our hot schools campaign, asking the province to invest in the adaptations necessary to ensure safe, healthy and dignified working environments for workers and students in a changing climate.

For Our Kids Nova Scotia stands in solidarity CUPE schools support staff in their demands for safe and dignified working conditions and adequate resources for schools.  We urge parents from across the province to reach out to Minister of Education Brendan Maguire and your local representative to tell them to put a fair deal on the table and avoid a disruption in learning for our kids.

For Our Kids NS stands in full solidarity with CUPE NS school support staff. #HotSchoolsCoolSolutions #SupportSchoolStaff
