Why?

This is your opportunity to impact how Canada will reach net-zero emissions by 2050!

It's a critical goal, and how we get there matters. That's why Bill C-12 is important for you to know about and speak up about.

Bill C-12 is Canada's first attempt at  establishing a climate accountability framework for Canada, and the consensus is that it's not strong enough. Committing to net-zero emissions by 2050 is a good start but climate scientists are telling us we also need to limit warming to 1.5C to prevent catastrophic climate change in our children’s lifetimes. To have a chance of keeping warming at 1.5 degrees, we need to cut our emissions in half by 2030. That is not part of Bill C-12, and it needs to be.

As other countries ramp up their ambitions to reduce emissions, Canada is falling farther and farther behind. The UK, which implemented its climate accountability legislation in 2008, has now agreed to reach 68% below its 1990 levels in 2030.  And the Biden-Harris administration has indicated that it will significantly increase its targets too.

Members of North Shore's Community Climate Hub are petitioning Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and MP for North Vancouver, for amendments to strengthen the targets and accountability in Bill C-12. Please, add your voice to ours!
