What is a Climate Cafe?
The Climate Psychology Alliance of North America defines a climate cafe in this way:
- An informal, open, respectful, confidential space to safely share emotional responses and reactions related to the climate and environmental emergency (i.e. a “container”).
- A space for exploration of thoughts, feelings and experiences rather than what we are DOING about the climate crisis.
- A quiet, reflective experience - a haven from usual busyness and activity.
- Not designed to lead participants to any conclusion or toward action (actions can be discussed, but reflection is paramount).
Attending a Climate Cafe can help participants process emotions related to climate exchange, but it is not a replacement for therapy.
How will the For Our Kids Climate Cafe be structured?
The Climate Cafe will be co-facilitated by two members of the For Our Kids support team. They’ll begin by introducing the purpose and flow of the session, then invite participants to take turns sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to climate change while others listen with care and without interruption. At times, facilitators may offer a question prompt to help guide the round of sharing.
How many people can attend the Climate Cafe?
We will limit the climate cafe to 12 participants in order to allow time for everyone to share. If the 12 spaces fill up, we will start a waitlist. Please change your RSVP if you are no longer able to attend, so we can open up space for others.
PLEASE NOTE: We ask that participants arrive on time to the Climate Cafe. We will stop admitting participants at 5 minutes after the start time of the Climate Cafe. This helps to minimize disruptions, and sets up a safe space that helps a deeper conversation unfold.
