Prime Minister Trudeau, Mr. O'Toole, Mr. Blanchet, Mr. Singh, and Ms. Paul,
As the leaders of our federal parties, you’ve been responsible for leading Canada through the Covid-19 crisis by focusing on the health and well-being of Canadians. I’m writing to urge you to act equally courageously to lead us through the climate crisis. This is an existential crisis that reaches beyond party lines; at times like these, Canadians expect their leaders to work together and get immediate action.
Bill C-12, Canada’s Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, is a step in the right direction. Now, it needs to be debated knowledgeably, strengthened in terms of targets and timelines, adopted, monitored and committed to seriously.
We are in the most decisive decade in human history, and you have a chance to pass a robust climate accountability act that will give children and future generations a fighting chance for a liveable future. Please do not squander this crucial opportunity.
There are practical amendments that can be made to Bill C-12 to align it with what climate scientists and leaders around the world agree is needed, including:
-
a target to decrease GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, on the path to net-zero by 2050, and
-
a 2025 milestone to make sure we’re on the right path and make immediate corrections if we’re not.
As your constituent, and on behalf of the many parents who share my concern but may be silent for many reasons, I urge you to be truly accountable for lowering Canada’s GHG emissions. There are massive and urgent changes needed to support our transition as a country away from fossil fuel production and use, but we are seeing you lead us through massive and urgent change right now and we know it’s possible.
Sincerely,
