CBC story "Why can’t more Canadian kids ride electric school buses?" features For Our Kids

May 2026

CBC's climate solutions-focused radio show, What On Earth with Laura Lynch, recently featured a story entitled "Why can’t more Canadian kids ride electric school buses?

The story starts in Richmond, BC, interviewing high schoolers who express gratitude for their electric school bus (ESB) -- they like that it's quieter and far more environmentally friendly than traditional diesel buses. The story then pivots to Montreal, where Jennifer Smith, For Our Kids Montreal member, talks about how an ESB temporarily replaced her children's regular diesel bus. Jennifer says, "I was genuinely excited when the electric school bus came to pick up my kids for the first time. It felt like real climate action," and was better for the environment, the community, and kids who have asthma, like her son.

The story also explores the efforts to electrify bus fleets across Canada, interviewing staff at Green Communities Canada and discussing the Canadian Electric Schoolbus Alliance (CESBA) (of which For Our Kids is a member), as well as CESBA's recent ESB Report Card, which finds that BC, Quebec and PEI are in the lead of electric school bus adoption.

The need for ESBs is urgent, and we are grateful to CBC for covering this important story. Hopefully this will inspire more high-quality media coverage!
