If you live in Ontario, you likely know the provincial government is trying to address a dire lack of affordable housing through its proposed "More Homes Built Faster" Act (Bill 23).
Parents, grandparents, and all those envisioning community-friendly neighbourhoods and a sustainable future for kids know that getting homes "built faster" isn't the only consideration. Bill 23 is dangerously short-sighted because it trades environmentally-sensitive areas for more sprawling development which increases GHG emissions, creates more of the isolating and vehicle-dependent neighbourhoods that contribute to environmental degradation, and, most significantly, will not address the need for affordable housing.
At the same time, they've provided a tiny window of opportunity for the public to respond and provide feedback to the proposed bill. We've prepared a submission that will be sent to the Standing Committee on Heritage, Infrastructure and Cultural Policy which is reviewing the bill. Deadline for submission is Thursday, November 17th at 7pm ET.
