I wanted to invite you to join me in the RBC Day of Action, which Leadnow is holding on Thursday, April 7 across Canada. The Victoria event is at 2:30 pm on Thursday April 7. It’s outside the main RBC branch: 1079 Douglas Street. We held a similar event in October, and it was very successful! If you would like to take part, that would be fantastic! Here’s where you can RSVP for the Victoria event: https://act.leadnow.ca/22_rbc_agm/victoria/ Why a day of action? RBC is the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Canada, and fifth in the world. It has poured over $200 billion into fossil fuels since the Paris climate agreement was signed, and a recent report* has found that its investments are still increasing. (*Banking on Climate Change, 2022). RBC is also financing the Coastal GasLink pipeline on Wet'suwet'en territory, as well as countless other human-rights violating and climate-wrecking projects worldwide. On April 7th, RBC’s shareholders will come together for their annual general meeting. They’ll celebrate their ill-gotten gains, and their company will be in the spotlight. They're counting on using it as an opportunity to show off their corporate strength. But we’re going to steal the show. Following Wet'suwet'en Leadership and Land Defenders calls to action, Leadnow members will join a broad coalition of organizations shining a spotlight on the planet-killing investments RBC continues to make, and pulling back the curtain on RBC’s greenwashing. Together, we’ll ensure that RBC can’t hide the truth from its customers and potential customers anymore, exactly what their executives fear. By taking action, you will join us in demanding that Canada’s worst fossil bank, RBC, respect the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples and immediately put a halt to funding the expansion of fossil fuel production and infrastructure such as Coastal Gas Link.
